This special aquarium plant is called “moss ball”, however it belongs to the Green Algae. Aegagropila linnaei, also known as “Marimo”, is an extremely slowly growing algae. It occurs in clean lakes where it forms flat cushions as well as hollow balls rolling about the ground, formed by gentle waves in the shore zone.

In the aquarium moss balls are decorative in the foreground and midground. It is recommended to rinse them under flowing water in time to remove excess detritus. Algae balls have a lot of surface area for microorganisms and are preferred grazing grounds for shrimps.
